Generic for Monopril: An Overview
Monopril® (
fosinopril sodium) is a prescription medication that has been licensed to
treat high blood pressure (
hypertension) and
congestive heart failure. Monopril is part of a class of drugs called angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, or ACE inhibitors for short. Monopril helps to block the angiotensin-converting enzyme, which is normally part of a reaction in the body that causes blood vessels to narrow (constrict). By blocking this enzyme, Monopril causes blood vessels to relax, which lowers
blood pressure. It also allows the heart to work more efficiently.
Monopril was originally developed by Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. It has since come off patent, making it available as a generic.
