Drug Interactions With Metoprolol Succinate

Cimetidine (Tagamet)
If you are taking both metoprolol succinate and cimetidine, your body may metabolize metoprolol succinate differently than intended. This can cause an increased level of metoprolol succinate in your body. If you are using these medicines together, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely and/or adjust your metoprolol succinate dosage if needed.

Clonidine (Catapres, Duraclon)
If you are taking metoprolol succinate with clonidine but then stop using the clonidine, your blood pressure may increase dramatically. Make sure to talk with your healthcare provider about how these medicines can be stopped safely.

Digoxin
Combining metoprolol succinate with digoxin may cause a dangerously slow heart rate (bradycardia). You may need to be monitored closely if you take these medications together. In some cases, metoprolol succinate should not be taken with digoxin.

Diphenhydramine (Banophen, Benadryl)
If you are taking metoprolol succinate and diphenhydramine, your body may metabolize metoprolol succinate differently than intended. This can increase the level of metoprolol succinate in your body. If you are using these medicines together, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely and/or adjust your metoprolol succinate dose.

Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil)
If you are taking metoprolol succinate and hydroxychloroquine, your body may metabolize metoprolol succinate differently than intended. This can cause an increased level of metoprolol succinate in your body. If you are using these medicines together, your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely and/or adjust your dose of metoprolol succinate.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)
NSAIDs may decrease the blood pressure-lowering effects of metoprolol succinate. Talk with your healthcare provider about using NSAIDs and metoprolol succinate together in your particular situation.
