Dosing With Metoprolol Succinate

For people with angina symptoms, the recommended starting metoprolol succinate dosage is 100 mg once a day. The recommended starting dose of metoprolol succinate for controlling high blood pressure is 25 mg to 100 mg once daily. For the treatment of congestive heart failure, dosing with metoprolol succinate typically starts at 12.5 to 25 mg once daily. Talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist if you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or metoprolol succinate dosing in general.

Dosing With Metoprolol Succinate: An Introduction

The dose of metoprolol succinate (Toprol-XL®) that your healthcare provider prescribes will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • Your age
  • The medical condition you are being treated for
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be currently taking
  • How you respond to metoprolol succinate.

As always, do not adjust your metoprolol succinate dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Dosing With Metoprolol Succinate for High Blood Pressure

The recommended starting dosage of metoprolol succinate for people with high blood pressure (hypertension) is 25 mg to 100 mg once a day. After a couple of weeks, based on the blood pressure response and/or metoprolol succinate side effects, the metoprolol succinate dosage may be increased or decreased. Your healthcare provider may also add a diuretic (a "water pill") or another blood pressure medication if your blood pressure is not controlled by metoprolol succinate alone.

The maximum recommended daily dose of metoprolol succinate is 400 mg.
