Congestive Heart Failure Home > Precautions and Warnings With Metoprolol Succinate
A few of the conditions you should tell your healthcare provider about before you take metoprolol succinate include emphysema, bronchitis, and asthma. Among the people who should not take this drug are those with a slow heartbeat, serious congestive heart failure, or sick sinus syndrome. Additional warnings and precautions with metoprolol succinate include potential drug interactions, the risk of heart failure in some people, and the safety of taking it while nursing.
You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking metoprolol succinate (Toprol-XL®) if you have:
- Heart disease, including congestive heart failure, an irregular heart rhythm, or a history of a heart attack
- A slow heart rate
- Asthma
- Bronchitis
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Emphysema
- Kidney disease
- Diabetes
- Depression
- Pheochromocytoma
- Psoriasis
- Hyperthyroidism
- Raynaud's phenomenon or other circulation problems
- A blood vessel disease
- Any allergies, including allergies to other beta blockers, foods, dyes, or preservatives.
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you:
- Are pregnant or trying to become pregnant (see Toprol-XL and Pregnancy)
- Are breastfeeding
- Will be undergoing surgery or anesthesia.
You should also tell your healthcare provider about all other medicines you may be taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, antacids, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
