Edecrin
® (
ethacrynic acid) is a prescription medicine that is used to treat fluid retention due to several causes. It is part of a class of medicines known as diuretics. Because Edecrin is a strong diuretic, it is usually reserved for serious situations when a large amount of fluid needs to be removed from the body.
Edecrin is made by Aton Pharma.
Edecrin is a diuretic, which is commonly referred to as a "water pill.
" Specifically, the medication is known as a "loop diuretic," named after the part of the kidneys where it acts (the loop of Henle). It works by increasing the amount of salt and water that the kidneys remove from the blood. This extra salt and water is passed out through urine.
By increasing the amount of salt and water that is removed, Edecrin causes a decrease in blood volume. As a result, the medication can help with water retention.
