If water retention or high blood pressure cannot be treated with chlorothiazide, alternatives to the medication are available. Common alternatives for controlling blood pressure include changing your diet, drinking less alcohol, and losing weight. Chlorothiazide alternatives for treating water retention include other diuretics, limiting your salt and fluid intake, and becoming more active.
Chlorothiazide (Diuril®) is a prescription medicine used for controlling high blood pressure or dealing with fluid retention. For most people, chlorothiazide is effective in treating their condition, and most people tolerate it well. However, as with all medicines, side effects can occur or the medicine may not completely control a patient's condition. Fortunately, there are several alternatives to chlorothiazide for treating high blood pressure or water retention.
There are many alternatives to chlorothiazide for controlling high blood pressure (hypertension), including:
- Weight loss
- Limiting your salt intake
- Becoming more physically active
- Drinking less alcohol
- Changes in diet (including more fruits and vegetables)
